Mount Washington Valley Skating Club

First Honorary Lifetime Member Announced

At the annual meeting held on Friday June 21, the Board of Directors of the MWVSC announced that Mrs. Joan Tozzer Cave of Tamworth had been unanimously nominated as an Honorary Member of the MWVSC. Mrs. Cave was the U. S. National Ladies Figure Skating Champion from 1938-40. During that same time period she was also the U.S. National Pairs Figure Skating Champion partnered with Bernard Fox. She was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1997. The outbreak of hostilities in Europe prevented her from competing at the World Championships and the 1940 Olympic Winter Games were cancelled.

Mrs. Cave has been an enthusiastic supporter of the MWVSC since its formation and has demonstrated an avid interest in the continuing development of a strong skating club program in Mount Washington Valley. She is also one of the original sponsors of the construction of Ham Arena. The MWVSC extends our thanks and appreciation for her ongoing dedication to the sport of figure skating

President's Address to Club Members at the First Annual Meeting June 21, 2002

It gives me great personal  pleasure to announce that the Board of Directors of the Mount Washington Valley Skating  Club has voted unanimously to select its first Honorary Member.  I say personal, because she and I have known one another for a number of years, as neighbors in Tamworth and members of the Tamworth Foundation.

Joan (Joanne) Tozzer Cave is known to some of you who are familiar with the history of American skating, as a national figure skating champion.  In 1937 she earned the title of National Junior Ladies Champion. One year later, in 1938 she became both the National Ladies Champion, and with Bernard Fox the National Pairs Champions.  They represented the Skating Club of Boston.  In 1939 and 1940 Joan continued her reign in both the Ladies Singles and Pairs.  Lest you think that is the end, after the Figure Skating Hall of Fame was established in 1976 to honor those who have made outstanding contributions to the sport of figure skating in the United States, Joan was inducted into that Hall of Fame,  And the end is not yet.   She encouraged construction of the Ham Arena by making a significant financial donation.  She has helped the Club in its formation from the beginning, and is herself a participating member.  Joan has a vital interest in the continuing development of a strong skating club in the Valley. For all these reasons, Club members express our thanks and appreciation by choosing Joan Tozzer Cave as the first recipient of Honorary Membership in the Mount Washington Valley Skating Club.
