The Mount Washington Valley Skating Club is your resource in the White Mountains of Maine and New Hampshire for learning how to skate.
We teach children and adults of all abilities to skate for fun, competition and a lifetime of experiences within the skating community.
We welcome you to our beautiful home rink, the Ham Ice Arena where we offer Learn to Skate group lessons formatted by Learn to Skate USA. We instruct skaters in learn to skate for hockey and figure skating.
Our skaters have taken what they have learned here onto local, regional, national and collegiate levels of skating competition.
Our Learn to Skate USA group lessons include a 25 minute group lesson and 25 minutes of practice time. This practice ice may come prior to your lesson time, or after your lesson. Lesson times may change weekly so plan to be on time and ready to skate.

Sundays from 5:25 - 5:45. This class takes place in between Beginner & Hockey and Adult & Freestyle Learn to Skate Classes. The Skills Development class changes throughout the season offering specialized instruction ranging from Test Prep, Holiday Show Prep, Competition Prep and Exhibition Prep. We have an exciting new offer for skaters this year in Session 3: A choice of Theater On Ice (TOI) or Competition Prep in our specialized 20 minute segment!
Theater On Ice - Skaters that join the TOI group will learn skating moves, skills and choreography following USFSA TOI curriculum. At the end of session 3, skaters will perform an entire Theater On Ice Group Routine! Skaters continuing into session 4 will also perform this routine during our Spring Exhibition!
Competition Prep - Skaters choosing the Competition Prep option will work on competition jump, spin, and choreographic step sequence elements, and how to improve presentation. This is a great way for a skater who wishes to compete for the first time to prepare for a competition in one of the non-musical events. Skaters can begin competing once they pass Basic 1! The complete competition event scenario will be simulated to prepare the first-time competitor.
*It is important to note that for this year, parents registering their skater for either or both competitions will pay registration fees to the host rink and coaching fees in addition to session 3 registration fees. The competition coach will invoice parents/skaters individually for their coaching time at the competitions. The coaching time at the competitions is limited to actual practice ice time and 15 minutes per event. Practice ice coaching time is divided equally among all skaters using the same practice ice.
*Skaters choosing the TOI option may still compete at Skate Your Heart Out in Hallowell, ME and/or the North Atlantic Open in Falmouth, ME by working with their private coach on their programs.
Practice Ice is offered on Thursdays from 5:00 - 6:00pm. This is a great time to get in some extra practice without the hustle and bustle of Public Skating. Private lessons take place during this hour and can be arranged with the coaching staff. Skaters interested in competing or performing a solo in our Holiday Show or Spring Exhibition would work on choreography during this time.
